Secondary Schools
Children looking to move to secondary school at the end of year 6 are encouraged to start looking round school while your child is in year 5. Most secondary schools hold a number of open days in September. The closing date for applications to secondary schools is usually around mid-October.
Admissions are mostly handled by the Local Authority, but if the school you are applying for is an academy (and most secondary schools are now academies) you should always check their arrangements.
For further information about South Glos admissions please visit their website (click here)
For other local authorities (eg Bristol) you will need to check on their websites for information.
Offers will be made on or around the 1st March each year.
Local Secondary Schools
If you live in or near Stoke Gifford, there are four Olympus Trust secondary schools covering this area: Abbeywood Community School; Bradley Stoke Community School; Patchway Community College and Winterbourne Academy.
The majority of the children from St Michael's go on to Abbeywood School, whilst others go to a variety of schools elsewhere in South Glos or Bristol. Each school will have specific transition arrangements which involves a visit from a secondary representative, moving up days and our staff will complete academic and well-being information which is passed to the new school.
Grammar Schools
Some of our children complete the Grammar school 11+ exams in year 6. There are a number of free grammar schools in the Gloucestershire area. Additionally, Bristol hosts
a number of fee paying institutions. Year 6 staff will often be asked to provide a reference if applications are made to these schools.
Concerns
Please speak to one of the year 6 team if you have any concerns about completing the LEA applications, entrance tests for grammar schools or transition arrangements.
